The Department of Bioengineering at Imperial College London dates from 2001 when it was renamed from the Department of Biological and Medical Systems. The department has its roots in two well-established research groups that date back to the 1960s: the Physiological Flow Studies Unit; and the Engineering in Medicine Laboratory.

The Court of Imperial College London was created in 1998 when the College received its new Charter. At this time the Governing Body was replaced by a Court and a Council. The Court meets once each year and comprises about 150 members representing the variety of College stakeholders.
