The College Archives of Imperial College London was established in 1956 with the appointment of the first archivist in 1957. Prior to the establishment of the archives, a muniment room was established in 1937 to gather materials relating to the history of College. The muniment room was set up the Records Committee which had been established in 1934 to organise the collection of college records.

The Department of Bioengineering at Imperial College London dates from 2001 when it was renamed from the Department of Biological and Medical Systems. The department has its roots in two well-established research groups that date back to the 1960s: the Physiological Flow Studies Unit; and the Engineering in Medicine Laboratory.

Grantham Institute

The Grantham Institute - Climate Change and the Environment was launched in February 2007 with the announcement of a multi-million pound donation from the Grantham Foundation for the Protection of the Environment.

The Senate of Imperial College London was created in 1998 when the College received its new Charter. At this time the Board of Studies was replaced by a Senate. The Senate meets at least three times each year and comprises about 58 members representing the staff and students of College. The Senate appoints committees to help in the management of specific functions of the college.
